Loren

The following day, Bruce had a surprise in store for Loren. He’d decided they would take the entire day off to spend time together, and, with Levi’s help, Bruce suggested a two-person canoe trip. Loren didn’t need any encouragement to agree to the plan. He was eager to leave the cabin as soon as Bruce said they were visiting Lone Cedar Lake.

Brandon and Levi set them up with the canoe, and Elle drove Bruce and Loren to their put-in point. At the last minute, she asked, “Are you sure about the two of you alone? I trust your paddling skills, but I’d hate for you to get lost out there.”

“I remember,” said Loren. “I also called Levi earlier this morning, and he gave me thorough instructions that I typed into my cellphone. If we get lost, we can retrace our path and get back on track.”

“There’s cell service most of the way, too,” said Elle. “Don’t hesitate to call if you want help. Have a fantastic day. I think this is what the two of you need about now.”

As Elle climbed into her pickup truck and drove off, Bruce asked, “What do you think she means about that?”

Loren said, “I think everyone believes we’re both wound up a little tight. I’ll do my best to relax, but you know—it’s not the easiest around you.”

“Why would you say that? Everyone knows me as one of their laidback friends.”

“Because I can’t stop thinking about the future—about what might happen. I think everything happens for a reason, and we need to figure out why I met you in the woods.”

Bruce asked, “Is it that hard?” He reached out and gave Loren a quick kiss. “Now, let’s get the canoe in the water. The only thing that concerns me is making sure we get back by dark.”

“Oh, that’s not a problem. I’m a speedster on the water. Just ask Levi.”

Bruce chuckled softly, and he soon found out what Levi meant. Bruce was strong and always matched his fellow paddlers in endurance. Still—Loren was a challenge. He dipped his paddle into the water with gusto. The canoe split the water like a hot knife through butter.

When they reached the middle of the second lake on the journey to Lone Cedar, Loren pulled his paddle in. “Let’s rest here for a few minutes.” He glanced over his shoulder. “It’s hard being the one in charge for something like this. I think I should be following you. Hopefully, you’ll remember it all well enough to lead us back.”

“I think I can handle that. Lay back and relax, Loren.”

Loren followed the instruction and lay back to rest his head in Bruce’s lap. All of the responsibility of leading the canoe trip drifted away for the moment. As he gazed at the tops of the pine trees, he said, “I’m still blown away by how beautiful it is up here.”

“It is gorgeous,” said Bruce. There’s one thing I wish I could do sometime, but I know it’s impossible.”

“What is
